Student Success Stories – Christine Renteria

“During my senior year of high school, joining JAG was the first step of my success in my high school to college transition. Joining this program was the first time I actually got involved with anything other than just my classes.

This program made me feel important for once and changed my perspective on how much of a difference I could make with just my input to society. In the program, I obtained the responsibility of Senior Vice President of Career Development.

My tasks included to explore the many career choices in the best interest of others. So that they understand they have a huge choice of careers to choose from. I also invited many successful people in their career to talk to our classroom about their job so that the students of JAG know from a workers perspective how the job actually is. This helped me network easily and get enough practice my networking skills.

Furthermore, JAG also demonstrated the importance of altruism to me. We participated in several community service opportunities which helped me grow as a person. This helped me grow by being inspired to give back to my community in the future. Lastly, taking the opportunity of being in JAG has shown me to take any good opportunity because you never know the lessons you will be taught or the doors that could be opened.

For instance, ever since I joined JCG, Mrs. Vega, our JAG specialist has pushed us all to get involved with other programs. Since then I’ve also been a part of Generation GO!, a paid internship offered at San Bernardino Valley College, and been motivated to apply to several scholarships that I did not even know existed because as a freshman college student, I had trouble looking for scholarships. Now, I entered college with the College Promise Program which is 2 years paid tuition at San Bernardino Valley College, The Making Hope Happen Foundation Scholarship which is $3,000, and I also earned the United Commercial Traveler’s Sholarship which is another $1,000 to help me in my first year of college as a first generation college student in my family.

I would recommend JAG to every high school student because it helped shaped me into the person I am today.”
