Stories from our Specialists – Karen

Karen was not your typical high school senior when she joined the J4CG program. Pregnant with her second child, she was determined to graduate and find a job.

Growing up, Karen moved a lot due to her family’s financial struggles. But the motivation to make something of herself, not only for her sake but for both of her children, did not waver. Fortunately, her parents were able to help care for her baby while she was at school and working.

When she joined the J4CG program, she learned how to create a resume and prepare for an interview at Jack in the Box – where she still works today. She learned and practiced coping skills to build resilience, so she knows how to seek the best possible solution for any problems that come her way. Whether it was personal problems or concerns about her future, she has learned the importance of weighing her options before acting rashly.

This year was full of accomplishments for Karen. She graduated high school and gave birth to her second child. Her plan is to continue working until the children are a few years older. She wants to go to a post-secondary school teacher once her children become a little more independent. Karen’s hard work and tenacity will provide her with many open doors in the future.
